Rural Ottawa Well Water Quality - Safe or Just "Gross"?

Living in rural communities like Manotick, Dunrobin, or North Gower comes with many perks, but managing your own water utility isn’t always one of them. In the Ottawa Valley, our unique geology—rich in limestone and shale—often leads to water that tastes, smells, or looks “off.”

But there is a big difference between water that is just an aesthetic nuisance and water that is unsafe. Here’s how to tell the difference and how to get the answers you need.

The "Aesthetic" Culprits: Hardness, Iron, and Sulfur

If your water is making life difficult, it’s likely due to one of these common local issues:

  • Orange Staining & Metallic Taste: This is usually Iron. It ruins laundry, stains sinks, and can even clog your fixtures over time.

  • The “Rotten Egg” Smell: This is Hydrogen Sulfide gas. It’s common in our region and can make showering or doing dishes an unpleasant chore.

  • White Scale & Soap Scum: Hardness (calcium and magnesium) is extremely high in rural Ottawa. It kills hot water heaters and leaves your hair and skin feeling dry.

The Solution: We offer Free In-Home Water Testing for these common issues. We can test your water right at your kitchen table and show you exactly what’s causing the problem and how to fix it.

The "Invisible" Threat: Bacteria (E. coli & Coliform)

While iron and sulfur are easy to smell and see, the most dangerous contaminants—E. coli and Total Coliform—are completely invisible. You can’t taste them, and your water might look crystal clear even if it’s contaminated.

Well water quality can change frequently. The best way to protect your drinking water is to test often., especially after heavy spring melts or significant rainfall.

How we help with Bacteria Testing: While we test for minerals in-home, bacteria testing must be done by a government certified  lab. This is offered for free to rural well owners through Public Health Ontario or we can assist you with a paid test through a licensed private lab

  1. We help homeowners understand the sampling process to avoid “false positives” (which often happen if you touch the inside of the bottle).

  2. We can guide you on where to pick up and drop off your sample bottles at a Public Health location.

  3. If your test comes back with bacteria present, we provide professional well shocking (disinfection) and UV system installations to make your water safe again.
